Tyler Reddick Hardest Working Driver at Kokomo Klash
Caps weekend with a win and strong Sprint run
Tyler came into Kokomo on Friday to do something no other driver was attempting. The plan was to run both the Sprint and Mini Sprint on Friday and the Midget on Saturday. Pulling triple duty fits Tyler quite well and he was prepared to do well in all 3 cars.
Sprint Car Action:
The entry list for the Sprint race at Kokomo was filled with very talented national touring Sprint car drivers. Tyler’s pill draw put him in the 3rd qualifying and heat group. After being third fastest in his qualifying group Tyler lined up behind Dave Darland and eventual A-Main winner Jon Stanbrough. Right at the wave of the green flag Tyler made a run at Stanbrough and Darland but both drivers managed to pull slightly ahead out of turn 2. Tyler settled into 3rd and held his line as a charge came at him from the #51 of Mike Hess. Tyler was able to hold Mike off and qualified for the A-Main.
Tyler’s finish in his heat put him in the 15th position for the A-Main. On the start of the race Tyler held the inside line and slid up coming out of turn 2. Several rows in front of him 2 cars flipped and Tyler managed to slow and pull down to avoid hitting the flipped cars. “When I saw the 11 flipping I knew to get down,” he said. “When I went to do that I saw a car flipping down there so I had to split them”. After the restart Tyler was charging into turn 3 when another sprinter pulled down in front of him. To avoid hitting the sprint he slammed the brakes and lost 3 positions. After the caution flag flew on lap 10 Tyler found some speed cutting down low out of turn 2. Running this low line Tyler tried to take the 18th spot from hot shoe Shane Hmiel before the caution flag flew again. He lined up 17th on the restart and lost one more position before he was forced to make an evasive maneuver to avoid a sprint that slammed one of the inside track tires. On the restart Tyler lined up in 16th where he settled in until the finish of the race. “ The Sprint race was wild that’s all I can say, it was a little crazy the way the car was handling but we were fine”.
The track was incredibly rough all night long. Survival was key to the night’s success and his smooth and cautious run proved that the night was only going to get better for Tyler.
Mini Sprint Action:
Tyler was 5th fastest in his qualifying group and lined up on the inside of row 3 for his heat. In turns 3 and 4 of the first lap he slid to the top to overtake the 3rd and 4th place cars. Tyler got a very strong run off of turn 4 and he dove hard into turn 1 to overtake the 2nd place car. During his battle to 2nd place the leader managed to pull too far ahead for Tyler to catch and he settled for a 2nd place finish.
Tyler’s 2nd place finish in his heat put him in the 4th spot for the A-Main. In the first turn of the race Tyler passed the 3rd place car and went to work on the leaders. The 2nd place car almost spun in turn 4 and Tyler reacted quickly to move around the slowing car. Tyler started charging on the leader and on the 3rd lap he shot by him to take the front position. “The 2nd place car jumped off the wheel of the 3m of Mark Perry and it upset the car and that gave me the advantage to get by Mark and it was a walk home from there.” Over the final 21 laps of the race the caution flag flew 3 times but no one had the speed to challenge Tyler. He managed to put 6 different sprinters a lap down. The Friday night race marked the first time Tyler drove the Mini Sprint at Kokomo.
After the race Tyler reflected on the performance of the car, “Very Good, very very good. “Track was a little rough, I hit a ditch a couple of times in 3 and 4 and in turn 2 it about took me out of the race. But it was a good car. The motor ran good and the car has been good.”
Midget Action
The day started early for the Tyler Reddick Motorsports team on Saturday. A problem was detected early and work began immediately to identify the problem. After changing the battery, ignition box, wiring harnesses, spark plugs, plug wires and coil the problem seemed to remain. The team went over the entire fuel and injection system and just found themselves scratching their heads. After throwing everything at the car the team was forced to pack it up for the night. Every race day can bring new challenges and every race day can bring success. Through it all Tyler remains optimistic about his future.

1st Jon Stanbrough, 2nd Dave Darland, 3rd Tyler Reddick...Heat race action and the speed is coming! | |
Tyler spent most of the race chasing Shane Hmiel Race track conditions were very rough as you'll see a first lap tumble by a couple of leaders. Tyler was and is always under the instruction of keeping his car on all 4 wheels. His first year in sprint is about just gettng laps. Sure if everything is perfect and we're leading, he knows to pour it on!
